EV charging station infrastructure and the spread of efficient domestic wall boxes are more than ever decisive factors for the resounding success of electromobility. Correspondingly, the demand for compact, robust and highly performant components is high.
When it comes to switching, there is good news from Panasonic Industry, as the new HE-R relay is the world’s first PCB based relay that can be used as the main switching element in 3-phase systems, being prevalent in Europe, and 1-phase systems according to US regulations. As both variants are remarkably compact, they can contribute to considerable space and cost savings.
AHER4 PCB-mount power relay
The AHER4 PCB-mount power relay from Panasonic Industry is the gold standard main switching element for 3-phase systems. The unique contact structure of the AHER4 relay offers a contact arrangement of 4FormA and 4FormA/1FormB (feedback contact variant). The AHER4 relays offers 4 normally open contacts, each contact can switch up to 50A, 277V AC at 85°C ambient temperature. For a simple implementation of a welding detection, it is also available with a IEC60847-4-1 compliant mirror contact mechanisms. Furthermore, the relay has an VDE approved outstanding short circuit capability up to 10kA for 22kW chargers, compliant with IEC62955. The AHER4 family is available in four different versions with 12V and 24V coil voltage and with and without a normally closed feedback contact.
AHER2A PCB-mount power relay
As a variant, the AHER2A is a 2AForm1B relay from Panasonic Industry which is compliant to UL508 for USA – and renders this type perfect for demanding wall box designs which need to meet US regulations. The AHER2A offers a unique 2FormA or 2FormA, 1FormB contact arrangement, with approved Irms = 5 kA, compliant with UL508 for the US market. As its European counterpart, it is also available with mirror contact mechanisms for the simple implementation of a welding detection. The two normally open (NO) contacts each switch 80 A, and the sophisticated thermal design is added to the low coil holding power. The optional normally closed (NC) contact can be used as a feedback contact to handle loads down to 10 mA, 5 V DC.
