Power:  Greater Conveniences, Greener Options

ENERGY STAR is a joint program with the U.S. EPA and DOE designed to encourage the production and adoption of more energy-efficient consumer electronics. 80 PLUS performance specifications require power supplies in computers and servers to be 80 percent or greater energy efficient.

The explosion in the number of portable devices has rapidly expanded the market for and reliance on batteries and alternative power sources.  Consumers use devices such as iPhones™, BlackBerries® and cell phones everyday.  However, consider the growing use of portable devices in aerospace and defense, and in the medical community with electronic implants or remote communication for in-home health care devices.  These devices include conveniences, from text messaging to life-saving monitoring, but they also raise valid concerns:  what powers them, and are there alternative, environmentally friendly options available?

Anticipating the demand for environmentally friendly power sources, Arrow Electronics has committed to supporting “green” initiatives and provides customers with expertise in selecting the most energy-efficient power solution for their systems.  Arrow is well-versed in government and industry energy standards, including ENERGY STAR and 80 PLUS® requirements, to name a few.

Fortunately, companies like Arrow are identifying new solutions in power sources and alternative, “greener” sources of power.  Arrow works with customers to design products, matching the right technology to the needs of the device.

“Customers can save valuable time and resources with a power solution built to their specific needs,” said Robert Hanley, vice president of marketing and asset management, for Arrow Electronics.  “For example, even rechargeable batteries can be customized.  In every design, we work with customers to factor in variables like size, weight, interchangeability, temperature, recharge rates and disposal options, to create a complete solution and achieve maximum efficiency.”

Arrow specializes in meeting customers’ power needs from concept through production.  In addition to its comprehensive inventory of “off-the-shelf” power supplies, Arrow’s custom design services include schematics, configuration, energy-efficient solutions and troubleshooting to help customers reduce design costs and product development cycle times.
