LED technology has been gaining attention in lighting and electronics
circles. Short for “light-emitting diode,” LEDs offer
greater durability and increased energy efficiency. Simply put, LEDs
last longer and cost less to operate than traditional lighting, making
them better for the environment and customers who use them - from
manufacturers to municipalities.
New uses for LEDs pop up every day it seems, such as street lamps,
flashlights, desk lamps, emergency vehicle lamps and marine lighting
to name a few. Today, LED technology is being applied to some unexpected
areas of consumer electronics such as televisions, LCD displays, signage
and light-up keypads. With legislation on the horizon that encourages
broader adoption of LEDs, demand is expected to grow.
There’s a reason for the excitement. Well-designed LED systems
can function smarter than traditional light sources. With the right
electronic components, LEDs outperform bulbs by implementing more
intelligent design features. Using LED light sources, lighting designers
can create fixtures that incorporate higher artistic capability. More
flexible design options, such as various shapes and sizes, are possible
given LEDs are so small. When combined with benefits like energy efficiency,
resistance to shock and vibration, and a longer lifecycle, LEDs are
a “win-win” for designers and customers alike.
Representatives from the lighting team at Arrow Electronics met with
industry professionals at this year’s Lightfair International
Trade Show and Conference in New York City. Dan Gatza, Arrow's director
of business development for lighting, reports that with greater advancements
in LEDs and driver technology, customers are more open to using LEDs
for both redesigning existing products and creating new ones. The
growing acceptance demonstrates that the industry is seeing the advantages
that this technology brings to lighting and electronics.
“LED technology crosses the spectrum of markets served by Arrow,
including medical, industrial, and aerospace and defense,” said
Gatza. “With the strength of our worldwide network, Arrow is
poised to propel this technology forward and offer greater value to
our customers.”
